Range of Application
Our DIN Abrasion tester (Abraser / Abrader), which is the original product developed in Germany and sold worldwide, is designed to conform to the ASTM D5963 and IS0 4649 standards (ISO 4649 has replaced the DIN 53516 standard). This top quality and highly popular abrasion tester will allow you to measure the abrasion resistance of rubbers (vulcanized thermoset rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers) that are subject to abrasive/frictional wear in their actual service, such as tires, conveyor drive belts, and shoe soles. Since wear is always a result of abrasion, different test methods have been developed for the simulation of long term wear.
The method conforming to ASTM D5963 / ISO 4649 has proven to be the best way of simulating long term wear. This method enables comparative tests for the control of the uniformity of a specific material. The achieved test results provide important parameters in respect to the wear of elastomers in practical use.
The abrasion resistance is measured by moving a test piece across the surface of an abrasive sheet mounted to a revolving drum, and is expressed as volume loss in cubic millimeters or abrasion resistance index in percent. For volume loss, a smaller number indicates better abrasion resistance, while for the abrasion resistance index, a smaller number denotes poorer abrasion resistance. The DIN Abrasion tester can also be used for comparative measurements on other materials such as plastics, chalk or painted surfaces.
Operation of DIN Abrasion Tester ( DIN Abraser / Abrader)
Our DIN Abrasion tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader) is very user friendly and does not require skilled personnel to be operated. The abrasion distance is easily selected by an adjusting screw. The constant pressure on the sample is set by using a variety of loading weights. If the test requires the sample to be rotated around its own axis, this rotation is easily activated by the operator. The abrasive sheet is attached to the drum with three strips of a double-sided adhesive, which are placed approximately every 120° around the circumference of the rotating drum. The abrasive sheet is blunted to the required degree of abrasiveness with the help of the included steel cylinder.
In order to comply with the standard, a minimum of three samples need to be tested and the result calculated as an average value. The test specimens can be vulcanized directly in a mould or cut from a sheet of vulcanized rubber plate with the help of a circular cutting tool. The sample is inserted into the sample holder so that 2 mm of the material remain exposed. The exposure is adjusted with a adjusting gauge. After placing the specimen mounted in the sample onto the abrasive sheet, the START-button is pressed and the test will be performed according to standard automatically. The test specimens are weighed before and after the test to an accuracy of 1 mg. The abrasiveness of the abrasive sheet is also tested with three tests before and after each test series, using rubber comparison samples.
Basic DIN Abrasion Testing Unit
The basic unit consists of the machine frame, drive system, sample holder as well as other accessories. The abrasive drum, the trapezoidal spindle and a guide rod are pre-installed on the machine frame and enables the lateral movement of the sample. The moveable parts of the machine are protected by a sturdy metal case. An integrated electric motor drives the drum and sample holder. The DIN Abrasion tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader) is turned on and of with ergonomically placed push buttons. After the Abrasion test has run its pre determined coarse the unit will automatically turn of, a safety switch will automatically stop the test as soon as the protective cover is lifted. The DIN Abrasion tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader) is also equiped with a thermo-switch to protect the tester from over heating. The sample holder is attached to a bracket which is automatically lifted from the abrasive sheet when the pre-selected abrasion distance has been completed. For the insertion or removal of samples, the bracket holding the sample holder can be swung upwards into a vertical position. This design allows for the sample projection to be adjusted according to prescribed tolerance limits with the help of an adjusting gauge. When testing samples with high abrasion, the sample holder can be positioned so that only the left or right half of the rotating drum is used (= half of abrasion distance). Exchangeable weights allows for the contact pressure force to be adjusted between 2,5 N and 20 N, depending on the type of material to be tested. The DIN Abrasion tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader) can also do series of measurements with rotating samples.
Accessories for DIN Abrasion Tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader):
Abrasive Sheet
An abrasive sheet will abrade approximately 210 ... 250 mg from the mass of a comparison sample. This abrasion should be reduced to approximately 210 ... 220 mg by abrading a steel sample across the entire width of the delivered drum once or twice. The sheet can be used as long as the abrasive loss of a comparison rubber sample is less than 180 mg. It has to be replaced then.
Rubber Comparison Sample Sheet
The rubber comparison sample sheet serves for the determination of the degree of abrasiveness in compliance with ISO 4649 (Formerly DIN 53516). It is produced of a special mixed rubber. Each plate has a dimension of approximately 186 mm x 186 mm and enables the production of about 100 comparison samples of a thickness of 8 mm.
Circular Cutting Unit
The circular cutting unit is used for the cutting of rubber samples with a diameter of 16 mm. The holder for the cutter is a morse taper No. 2 and can be fitted to a suitable drilling machine.
Replacement Cutter Spare cutter
For the circular cutting unit.
Increasing the sample pressure by 10 N
An additional weight of 10 N allows an increase of the pressure in steps by 12,5 / 15 / 17,5 and 20 N.
Drum Cleaning Unit
The drum cleaning unit consists of a set of brushes with holder, which is mounted on the rear of the sample holder and removes the dust from the abrasive sheet. A vacuum cleaner hose with a diameter of 40 mm can be connected to the brush holder.
Replacement Brushes
For the drum cleaning unit
Precision Balance
The precision balance with digital display, for the weighing of the sample, consists of a metal housing with a glass-protected weighing space. Weighing tray Ø 80 mm Weighing range: 0 ... 110 g Display step: 0,1 mg Reproducibility: ± 0,15 mg Linearity: ± 0,2 mg Mains connection: selectable 110/220 V, 50/60 Hz Dust Cover
Dust cover
Consists of a transparent plastic cover.
